Turning a 2D object into a 3D object is an exciting way to add depth to your work.
Create the profile of an object with the Pen tool . The beginning and ending points of your shape need to align on the same vertical guide (A). Fill your profile with a solid color. The stroke should be set to none.

With your profile selected, go to Effect > 3D > Revolve. This opens the 3D Revolve Options dialog. Click the More Options button to expand the bottom of the dialog box to show the surface effects (B).

Keep the default settings and click OK. Your profile will now revolve around its center axis to create a 3D image (C). The default shading has been added to the image to define the curves and the light source direction. The front right of the object is in the light and the back left is in the dark.

To edit the 3D Revolve Options, select the profile, go to the Appearance window, and double-click the Effect icon next to the 3D Revolve line item (D). This opens the 3D Revolve Options and you can make your adjustments. Experiment with each of the settings. Turn on the Preview checkbox to see your changes in action.
